How many recessed lights and outlets can i put on a 15 amp circuit?
I am wiring a bedroom. It will have 8 recessed lights and 7 outlets. Can I put all of them on one 15 amp circuit or do I need 2?
By the national Electrical code, you could have 1 circuit, but I would do it with one for lights and the other for outlets.
Some other answers are not quite right. First, you should use the maximum rating of the fixtures to calculate the load, not the size of bulbs you are using. You can have 8 225 watt fixtures on a 15A circuit, so you should have no problem.
The 180 volt-amps (not watts) for a receptacle does not apply for residential applications, and the 80% breaker loading limit is for continuous loading (there is a specific definition of continuous in the code I won’t go into). Neither of these items apply to wiring a house.
There is no “12″ limit for a circuit in the code.
The limits that DO apply to this by code, are the recessed light limits above, and a square foot load limit. This has some room for interpretation, but unless your bedroom is over 600 sq ft you have no problem anyway. By code, a circuit can supply 600 sq ft of lights and receptacles, no limit on the number (for residential). But the code is a MINIMUM standard. Put in the 2 circuits.
