Top Four Tips for Installing Wireless Security Systems
Ensuring the general security of your home and the people within it is vital for every household. Wireless security systems are important pieces of equipment to install to protect your possessions and your family. All too often people rely on locks alone when it comes to securing their home but an alarm or other type of security system offers added protection and peace of mind. If you’ve already invested in the equipment and want to install it yourself then follow the top five tips below.
Mount it in the correct location
Make sure that you mount the system in the right place. Avoid placing the receiver or the receiver aerial near to Electrical equipment such as televisions or computer equipment as these can generate background noise. You should also try to avoid placing it next to large metal objects such as boilers, radiators or water tanks as they can prevent radio signals from passing between the transmitter and the control panel.
Make sure it’s in the correct orientation
Don’t be tempted to cut or alter the length of the aerial cable until you have checked the signal strength. Aerials are designed to a tuned frequency and tampering with the size of the aerial will affect the frequency and performance of the system. Take care to look at the direction which the cable exits the aerial and keep running the cable in the same direction and away from the aerial for as far as practically possible. Also, try if possible not to run your aerial cable next to mains cables.
Consider the wall thickness in your property
Before you install your device, you should make an assessment of the thickness of your property’s walls. Sometimes in properties with very thick walls, you can struggle to get the right amount of signal strength. If the receiver or the receiver aerial can be mounted high up in an attic space for example so the signal path is through the floor boards this can increase the signal strength to an adequate level, particularly where the devices are mounted on outside walls.
Carry out a signal strength test in various locations
It’s important before you mount your wireless security system to do a spot check of the signal strength and the background noise in your planned locations. If you find that a signal strength measurement is not available do a few tests to ensure that the alarm signals are received at the control panel. This is vital as if you mount your device without double checking the strength of the signal then it won’t be effective.
Every household should have a security device so that you can be protected from potential burglars or any other form of crime. There are a number of different wireless security systems available on the market and some companies can install them for you. If you want to install your own equipment then just follow the tips above for a successful installation process.
